Cultivators has introduced the Leafy Hydroponics Consortium, an international research partnership focused on improving hydroponic greenhouse production for leafy greens. The initiative brings together seed companies, technology providers, system experts, and researchers to develop practical, science-driven solutions for growers facing rising pressure to improve efficiency and sustainability.
The project is being coordinated by Cultivators with trials hosted at PSKW in Belgium, a respected applied horticultural research centre. Key partners include Rijk Zwaan, Enza Zaden, Hortiplan, Signify, Grodan, and Ellepot, along with several supporting companies specializing in climate control, irrigation, construction, and crop technology.
The research will examine how different varieties, lighting systems, irrigation methods, substrates, and greenhouse setups perform under commercial-style conditions. Crops under study include baby leaf lettuce, spinach, rucola, corn lettuce, and head lettuce types such as Little Gem and iceberg.
The program began early in 2026 as a two-year effort, with the possibility of growing into a longer-term knowledge platform. Findings will be shared through workshops, grower events, and major industry gatherings such as GreenTech Amsterdam and the Leafy Hydroponics Summit in June 2026.
More than a research project, the consortium signals a broader shift in the hydroponics sector toward closer collaboration between science and commercial production. For growers and industry stakeholders, it marks another step toward smarter, more precise, and more sustainable leafy green cultivation.
